      In the spirit of the season, High Voltage, Inc. and Ms. Kemberley ”Kem” Washington held a free financial seminar called “How to Budget Pass Your New Year’s Resolution,” on Saturday, January 25, 2014, at Dillard University. Ms. Washington is a Certified Public Accountant, personal financial writer and teaches at Dillard University. Participants learned how to put God first in their finances, use a budget as an inspiration, manage their bills properly, budget when “budgeting is not their thing,” and get an understanding of what is draining their finances.

(HVYC) is hosting Girls Circle support groups starting Saturday, June 22 until Saturday, July 27, at the New Orleans Healing Center, 2372 St. Claude Avenue from 10:30 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. in the Street University, classroom 256.   Audrey Blackwood, LPC, will facilitate the groups and Ayla Expose, MSW is the group coordinator.

      The Girls Circle is a model of structured support groups for girls ages 9 to 18. It is designed to foster self-esteem, help girls maintain authentic connection with peers and adult women in their community, counter trends toward self-doubt, and allow for genuine self-expression through verbal sharing and creative activity. A Girls Circle:

      Integrates relational theory, resiliency practices and skill building, utilizing a strengths-based approach;

      Increases protective factors, pro-social behaviors, connection, personal skills and strengths, and competence in girls;

      Is recognized as a promising approach in the Model Programs Guide by the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention.

      Is utilized nationwide in a broad spectrum of settings with diverse populations since 1994, such as schools, juvenile justice, peer leadership, health education, outdoor adventure, positive youth development, athletics, pregnancy prevention, boys and girls clubs, scouting groups, gang prevention and substance abuse prevention.

      Cost for the 6 week support group is $25, which includes group sessions, supplies and refreshments.

    • On Saturday,3/12/2011, the Urban League of Greater New Orleans will host its fifth annual Schools Expo at the University of New Orleans, Lindy Boggs Conference Center from 10am-2pm. This event is critical in creating equity in school choice while building a brighter future for all children. By providing a one-stop shop, parents will be able to learn about all school options in New Orleans. Additionally, the goal of the Expo is to also provide families with information on resources available throughout the community which compliment and augment the central aim: developing healthy, happy and intellectually accomplished children. Prevent Death By LifeStyle Initiative

High Voltage hosted a Prevent Death By LifeStyle New Orleans Musicians Assistance Foundation event at Excel Academy, on Friday, October 30, 2009.  There were plenty of laughs, tears, song and dance to share with everyone.  Next event is at Fredrick Douglass Senior High School. 


Essence Music Festival

Very special thanks to our volunteers and corporate sponsors for making our participation in the Essence Music Festival 2010 community incentive an outstanding success! Essence Magazine celebrated its 16th anniversary of the Essence Music Festival themed Party with a Purpose in the New Orleans over the 4th of July holiday. Our corporate sponsors this year included: Administrative Resources & Solutions, Coca-Cola Company, Inc., Entergy New Orleans, Inc, Gertler, Gertler, Vincent and Plotkin LLP, Levy and Associates Employment Benefit Planners, and Wal-Mart.  The festival offered free seminars ranging from health to personal finance and ticketed nightly concerts.  New Orleans has hosted the Essence Music Festival for 15 years, with the exception being in 2006 due to the effects of Hurricane Katrina. Thanks again to all of our wonderful volunteers and corporate sponsors.


On August, 29, 2009, High Voltage, Inc. worked with the LSU/AG Center Master Gardeners and the Tulane Center for Public Service on a beautification project for Frederick Douglass High School.  Musical Entertainment was provided by Cindy Scott and Brian Seeger.  This community project was sponsored by Hands On New Orleans, Home Depot, New Orleans Musicians Assistance Foundation and the Pontchartrain Kiwanis. Special Thanks to the CrossRoads Project/Creative Forces, Upper Ninth Ward Farmers Market and the Renaissance Project. 


December 20, 2008 | Destiny Luncheon



High Voltage Youth Camp (HVYC), the PeyBack Foundation, New Orleans Musician's Clinic, Women on Assignment and the Maple Street Children's Book Shop will sponsor our a Destiny Holiday Luncheon for local children on Saturday, December 20, 2008, from 11:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. The Destiny Luncheon will take place at 3121 St. Bernard Avenue, in New Orleans. At this holiday event, children ages 8-13 will enjoy a free holiday luncheon and be entertained by John A. Brinson and the Roots of Music. Guest speaker is Mr. Happy Johnson, Founder of Blanket New Orleans. Following the luncheon, each student will receive a book from the High Voltage Giving Tree and the PeyBack Foundation. This event is completely committed.

January 17, 2009| Volunteer Opportunity: Tutors to assist student prepare for educational testing.

Volunteers are needed to assist students prepare for educational testing on Saturday, January, 17th 2009. Hours are from 9:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. or from 1:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. Free parking and lunch provided.

Back to School Supply Drive

High Voltage Youth Camp is collecting school supplies from now until August 15 as part of its Annual Back to School Supply Drive. The supplies will be given to several area organizations and schools in the New Orleans area. Businesses and individuals wishing to contribute to the drive should contact High Voltage at 504-458-3848 or info@highvoltageyouthcamp.org.

Anything from pencils to backpacks will be accepted.. Contributions will go directly toward helping children in our local neighborhoods get off to a great start in the new school year. High Voltage is a volunteer non-profit organization.

Global Youth Day of Service 2009

In honor of Global Youth Service Day, The Staples Foundation for Learning and HandsOn New Orleans supported High Voltage's Mother's Day service learning project. During this project, 34 students volunteered alongside students from UNO / Nelson Charter School in order to create colorful flower pots for seniors living in John J. Hainkel, Jr. Home and Rehabilitation Center. Following the day of service, students returned to the senior center in order to give an oral presentation to the community about what the learned from the gardening activity and in order to present seniors with the plants.

Membership Meeting
June 6, 2009 | The next meeting of High Voltage, Inc. will be held at Borders Bookstore, 3338 St. Charles Avenue in New Orleans on Saturday, June 6 at 10:00 a.m. in the cafe. Featured speaker will be Emmy-Award winning journalist, Monica Pierre. Monica has worked in both television and radio news, and has served as host of various public affairs shows. She is co-host of the morning show on WWL-AM in New Orleans.
